TS Helene update for Saturday, Sep. 28, 2024

Saturday, Sep. 28, 2024. Morning update:

New River Light and Power (NRLP) linecrews and staff have been working around the clock since 3 a.m. Friday, September 27, 2024, to restore power and keep lines of communication open. Lineworkers and technicians were in the field before, during and after Tropical Storm Helene made its devastating way to our mountain home.

The NRLP service territory has experienced approximately 75 outage events since early Friday morning affecting large portions of our customers. These events are spread throughout our area and vary in size and cause. Some locations are still inaccessible as of Saturday morning.

NRLP linecrews have restored about 25 of those outage events. Approximately 10–15% of our customers are still without power.

Restoration work has been difficult as our crews battle unprecedented weather conditions, downed trees, mudslides and more.

As we head into hour 30 of restoration work, there is good news to share: Boone is strong and not alone. Late last night, crews, trucks and equipment arrived from Wilson Energy of Wilson, N.C., after NRLP sent out a request for mutual aid. Alongside our own, the team from Wilson will continue the hard work of restoring power to our community.

We ask that you remain vigilant and if you see a downed power line, assume it is electrified and call us right away at 828-264-3671. If you are in imminent danger, call 911. Continue to monitor our website at nrlp.appstate.edu and social media on Facebook, Instagram and X, for updates.

To prepare for power restoration, please disconnect appliances and electronics, especially anything that may pose a fire hazard once power is restored. Do not turn everything on at once.

We continue to ask for your patience and support. Everyone at NRLP has been focused on one thing — getting the lights back on.
