This St. Patrick’s Day, remember, it’s not luck! Whether you want to save on energy costs, prepare for storms and outages or make your property a little greener, it takes work. But don’t worry, we’re here to help.
We asked NRLP team members to share their favorite energy and preparedness tips. Here’s what they had to say.
Small changes can lead to big savings.
Use LED lightbulbs. Residential LEDs use at least 75% less energy — and last up to 25 times longer — than incandescent lighting. In commercial spaces, LEDs pack an even bigger energy and cost savings. Lighting makes up 17% of all electricity consumed in commercial buildings across the country.
Maintain your heating and cooling system, remembering to change dirty filters often. This saves money not just in energy consumption but by reducing the wear and tear on your system.
Seal drafty areas to keep heating and cooling inside your building.
Unplug unused electronics to reduce phantom energy consumption.
Temperature control makes up at least half of your residential energy bill. Consider lowering your thermostat in the winter and raising it in the summer. A few degrees can make a big difference in your usage and bill.
Don’t forget to turn the lights off when you leave the room. Conservation doesn’t have to be complicated.
To help bring renewable energy to the High Country, consider joining NRLP’s Green Power Program. For as little as $5 extra each month, you can be a part of our hometown’s clean energy future.
Don’t leave preparedness to chance.
Your first step is to make a plan. Explore Ready.gov for readiness resources, including a checklist to help you get started.
Communicate your plan with your family and friends.
Don’t forget to include pets in your emergency plans.
Know how to get updates from your local authorities and utilities. To report an outage and see updates, visit our website at nrlp.appstate.edu. Outages may also be communicated on our social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and X.
