NRLP Scholarship Program

As a part of our commitment to helping improve quality of life in our community, New River Light & Power awards scholarships to local graduating high school seniors in Watauga County, as well as contributes to the general scholarship fund at Appalachian State University.

New River Light & Power Scholarship

Supporting Mountaineers from Watauga County.

All graduating high school seniors in Watauga County who have been accepted to Appalachian State University are eligible for the New River Light & Power Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to approximately five students each year.

The New River Light and Power Scholarship is renewable for up to eight consecutive semesters or four years of undergraduate work, excluding summer sessions. A minimum GPA requirement must be met to qualify for renewal.

All first-year students accepted to App State and who meet eligibility requirements are submitted for this scholarship. Additional application instructions can be found on the App State Scholarships website.

New River Light & Power Lineworker Scholarship

In partnership with Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCC&TI), NRLP is proud to support the next generation of lineworkers with a full scholarship to CCC&TI's Electrical Lineworker Institute. The scholarship covers tuition and fees associated with the Electrical Lineman I course. 

This course prepares students for a fulfilling career in the electrical utility industry and includes topics such as transformer and meter installation, and basics of overhead and underground high voltage distribution. 

The scholarship is available to all graduating Watauga High School or Watauga Innovation Academy seniors. The scholarship will be awarded based on applicant's need and demonstrated interest in the electrical linework field. Applications are available here (PDF). The deadline to apply is April 10. New River Light & Power Company reserves approximately $650,000 each year for the general scholarship fund at Appalachian State University. This contribution goes to support the Chancellor's Scholarship and other scholarships awarded in the name of the university.
