One year after Hurricane Helene

 Dear Friends and Neighbors,

One year ago, our community faced something we never could have imagined. Hurricane Helene was a once-in-a-lifetime storm that tore through the heart of North Carolina’s Appalachian country, leaving behind destruction that will remain etched in our memories for years to come. Yet when I look back on that time, what stands out is not the damage, but the strength, generosity and resilience of the people of the High Country.

From the very first hours of the storm, the spirit of our community shone through. NRLP crews and staff were at the forefront — some enduring treacherous conditions and roads to reach work — reported for duty without hesitation. They left behind their families and homes to serve this community, working around the clock to bring back power and a sense of normalcy.

And they were not alone. Appalachian State University, the Town, local businesses, churches and neighbors immediately began helping one another, and us. From outside the High Country, support quickly poured in, too. Thanks to the mutual aid network facilitated by ElectriCities of North Carolina, crews from the City of Wilson arrived that very night, followed closely by those from the Cities of Lexington and Washington. Together, these North Carolina public power teams tripled our workforce. Because of their support, power was restored to all safe structures in just a few days, allowing us to shift our focus to helping neighboring utilities, families and neighbors rebuild.

Through it all, the outpouring of kindness from our community was humbling. Each day, our linemen returned with stories of people offering food and water — even when they weren’t sure if they’d have enough themselves. Children sent thank-you notes and brown-bag lunches, their crayon drawings and stickers a reminder of hope when weariness crept in. Our customer service team received calls and visits of appreciation every day. These acts of generosity carried us forward.

The sheer magnitude of Helene required every ounce of strength and dedication by our team, and I could not be prouder of NRLP and the people of western North Carolina. Though many are still rebuilding and healing, we stand together, stronger for what we endured.

On behalf of everyone at NRLP, thank you. Thank you for your patience, kindness and spirit. Thank you for reminding us that no storm can overcome the strength of this community.

With deep gratitude,
