Saving energy —and money — during cold weather months doesn’t have to be scary. By making small changes and taking a few simple steps, you can slay energy costs this fall and winter.
Slay energy vampires in your home
Energy vampires are all those things left plugged in that are slowly using phantom energy in your home.
- Unplug all unused electronics and small appliances.
- Group electronics on power trips and turn them off all at the same time.
- Enable energy-saving settings on devices and tools.
- When buying new appliances, consider models with the ENERGY STAR® label, smart timers and other energy-cutting features.
Drafts are for haunted houses only
Sealing draft windows and doors can help keep the cold out and the warmth in, leading to energy savings.
- Use caulking to seal around windows and doors.
- Place a rolled-up towel or blanket at the bottom of external doors.
- Use heavy curtains and window treatments to help keep your home warm.
- If you’re updating your home, upgrading insulation is a great way to improve energy efficiency and can save up to 20% on home heating and cooling costs.
