Thanksgiving tips from NRLP

Nov 26, 2025

A family sits around a table with Thanksgiving foods, smiling.

As Thanksgiving arrives, New River Light and Power extends heartfelt gratitude to the customers and community we are honored to serve.

Thank you for trusting NRLP with your holidays

This season is an important reminder of the trust customers place in NRLP to help power the moments that matter — from the ovens working overtime to the warm, welcoming homes that bring families together. NRLP is deeply thankful for the continued support of our community, whose confidence in your hometown utility helps us fulfill our mission every day.

As you prepare for the holiday, NRLP also encourages customers to consider simple ways to save energy while celebrating. With cooking, hosting, and colder temperatures, Thanksgiving can be one of the higher-usage days of the season. A few small adjustments can help manage energy costs without sacrificing comfort.

Thanksgiving energy-saving tips

  • Use your oven efficiently. Avoid opening the oven door frequently — each peek can lower the temperature by as much as 25 degrees. Cook multiple dishes at once when possible.
  • Put smaller appliances to work. Slow cookers, air fryers, and microwaves use less energy than a full-sized oven.
  • Let your home do the heating. The warmth from cooking can help heat your house, so consider lowering the thermostat a few degrees while the kitchen is running.
  • Use LED lighting. If you’re decorating or hosting, choose LED bulbs — they use up to 75% less energy and last longer.
  • Run full loads. Wait until the dishwasher is full before running it, and use the energy-saving or air-dry setting.
  • Heading out of town? Set your thermostat to about 55 degrees to save energy and keep your home safe from freezing weather.

Winter outage preparedness

As winter approaches, NRLP encourages customers to be ready for severe weather and potential outages. A few simple steps — like preparing an emergency kit, keeping phones charged, and knowing how to report outages — can make a big difference when storms roll in. From our family to yours, we wish you a warm, safe and joyful Thanksgiving.
