Public Power Week
Each October, New River Light and Power joins public power utilities across the country in celebrating Public Power Week — a time to recognize the people, programs and partnerships that help power our communities.
NRLP has proudly powered the Town of Boone area since 1915. As your local electric utility, NRLP provides reliable electric service to approximately 9,000 customers while supporting the community we call home.
Public Power Week allows us to highlight the people behind the power, connect with our customers and community while sharing more about the work that keeps the High Country powered every day.
A Week Worth Celebrating
Public Power Week 2026 | October 4–10
From celebrating our employees to connecting with students and community partners, Public Power Week 2026 was full of meaningful moments.
This year’s celebration included special activities with Hardin Park Elementary School, community outreach, employee appreciation and recognition of NRLP’s five Public Power Awards of Excellence — all reminders that public power is about the people, partnerships and shared commitment that keep our community strong.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Public Power relies on people with diverse skills and talents. From line workers and engineers to customer service professionals and more, every role helps keep the lights on.
For Public Power Week 2026, NRLP partnered with Hardin Park School to introduce students to careers in the utility industry through coloring sheets and drawing activities. One student from each grade was selected for a special lunch with NRLP lineworkers.
Mr. Terry Gunnell-Beck’s fifth-grade homeroom even created a special podcast exploring public power careers — a thoughtful surprise that made the celebration especially memorable for our team.
Connecting with the next generation of public power doesn’t stop once the celebration ends. You can find our team at different events throughout the year, including Girl Power NC and the WHS & WIA College and Career Fair.
